The backlog
A 0:15 clip from Hundred Stories, the tower-building game you can play in your browser.
B1
A tenant sets one bag outside the door. Then another. A week goes by and the pile is taller than the neighbors, who lean away from it as they hurry past. It sways, it tips, and a collection worker with a cart makes the catch of the season, then sweeps up and takes a bow.
In the game, the rooms people use make waste every morning. The recycling center's collection workers ride the elevators to pick it up. Let it pile up two mornings in a row and the room counts as dirty, and dirty rooms drag down their rating.

A hallway of apartment doors. A tenant peeks out and sets one bag of trash by the door. A waste meter with a day counter sits in the corner of the screen, at day 1.
Nova: It's one bag. It's fine.
Time speeds up. Bag after bag flies out of the dark doorway, the meter climbs, and the day counter climbs with it to day 9. Neighbors walk past, lean away from the pile and hurry off.
Narrator: It is now nine bags.
The pile starts to sway. The meter is in the red.
Nova: Still fine.
Time slows. The pile tips over.
Narrator: Luckily, somebody is on cleaning duty.
A collection worker sprints in with a cart, lunges and catches the pile. They push it upright, load the bags into the cart and sweep up. The meter drops to empty. The worker wipes their brow and gives a thumbs up.
Nova: Told you.
