The wait

A 0:16 clip from Hundred Stories, the tower-building game you can play in your browser.

B1

A full lobby, one car, and every eye on the floor indicator. Then the ding. The doors open, and one person strolls out in no hurry at all. A double take, a whole crowd's shoulders drop, and the doors close again.

In the game, every minute spent waiting for a car adds stress, and you can see it over each person's head. When the lobby crowd wears red marks, add a car, add a shaft, or run an express car to the busiest floors.

Read The wait

An elevator lobby on floor 9. One person waits and jabs the call button. The other car's display reads 14.

Narrator: Six people, one elevator, and a floor counter in no hurry at all.

Five more people walk up and wait. One sits down on the floor. They all tap their feet in time. The counter ticks up, one floor at a time, and they all lean in.

Nova: Come on.

Ding. The doors open.

Nova: It's here.

One passenger strolls out, waves hi and walks off.

Narrator: And nobody moves until the doors start closing.

The crowd does a double take. Everyone puts a hand to their face. Then the doors start to close. They all run for the car and squeeze in. The doors bounce off them, then shut.

Nova: Every time.
